Today: Review of Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort (Cyprus)

Elegant and redefined, occupying a stunning 2 km (1.2 miles) beachfront location, the brand-new 5-star Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort opened in May 2022 and takes luxury hospitality in Cyprus (and the Mediterranean region) to a different level. Delivering an exclusive island experience, the resort, which is crafted from natural Cyprus stone, has been designed to reflect the surrounding landscapes and embody the rich culture of the island in its every line. Amongst its extensive facilities are 163 sea view guestrooms & 39 suites, a 130 m (43 ft) long beach cove, three outdoor pools with sunbeds and quiet areas, a tranquil indoor pool, an outdoor playground for younger guests, a fabulous spa, and 10 restaurants & bars.

Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort features in my top 10 list of the best beach resorts in Europe.

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • Enjoying an exclusive seafront location on the island’s south-west coast, Cap St Georgse Hotel & Resort is the best five star hotel in Cyprus, a Mediterranean island destination known for its dazzling azure seas, terrific beaches and endless sunhine. Travelers from across the world flock to Cyprus to enjoy a relaxing holiday on its idyllic shores & beaches, but the island – which is known as the birthplace of the Greek goddess Aphrodite – is so much more than that. Cyprus’ rugged interior, archaeological sites, and rural villages make it a great destination for walking, cycling and cultural discovery too. Staying at Cap St George Hotel & Resort also has the advantage that it puts you within close proximity of the buzzing seaside town of Paphos, a UNESCO World Heritage City with rich crumbling legacy from its Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras. The hotel is a 40 min drive from Paphos Airport, one of the two main international airports on the island.
  • Enveloped by verdant gardens brimming with centuries old olive trees, fragrant herbs and endemic flora, Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort has been designed by international acclaimed architect George Andraos & Associates in London. Crafted from natural Cyprus stone, the resort’s modern architecture and sleek interiors reflect the surrounding Mediterranean landscapes and embody a refined interpretation of the natural landscapes and rich culture of Cyprus. The massive hillside property is built in different terraces and levels, which cascade down from the top of the hill towards the resort’s private beach cove and shoreline. The main building’s top level is the resort’s design highlight as it houses a stunning, two-storage, light-flooded atrium lobby featuring marble floors, a lounge bar with sky piano, and an impressive themed concept chandelier by Lasvit. The lobby opens to a terrace with breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the resort grounds and the sunset.
  • Offering a collection of 163 guestrooms and 39 suites including a stunning 7 bedroom Presidential Villa Suite, Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort has a diversity of choice, from family-friendly to solo travelers’ options. Guestrooms located within the main building – which overlooks the pool area – are furnished with king or twin beds, while interconnecting family suites are also available and located in the main building. Next to the main building is another hotel wing – called The Residences – which offers more private and relaxing landscaped resort surroundings. The Residence is home to some more guestrooms, 18 of them with private heated pool, as well as the hotel’s pool suites which all come in a one or two bedrooms configuration. During my visit, I was upgraded to a Residence guestroom with private pool. The room had a chic design with some subtle touches through natural earth tones and luxuriant furnishings, wall art and lighting. The bathroom featured a free standing bathtub, separate shower and double vanities.
  • Most travelers come to Cyprus to relax on a beach and/or near a pool, and Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort certainly delivers on this point. The property is built on a prime spot of the island with a 2 km (1.4 miles) long seafront. Most of the shoreline is comprised of rocky coves along a walking path, but there are few stretches of (hidden) sandy & pebbly beaches in between. Two areas along the massive seafront are a bit more developed and feature sunbeds with umbrellas that are exclusively available to hotel guests: a quiet area on a cliff and a private sandy cove with a length of 130 m (43 ft). The latter also features several cabanas (which can be used by hotel guests at no extra charge). If you prefer to lounge poolside instead of on the beach, the resort features four shimmering swimming pools adorned with Marazzi Piedra tiles: three outdoor pools on the main pool deck (one of them a dedicated kids’ pool) and one indoor pool in the spa (cf infra).
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort features an excellent wellness center, called the Cleopatra Spa, on the ground floor of the main building. The spa – which is named after Queen Cleopatra of Egypt whose kingdom for a brief period also included Cyprus  – is a sanctuary of tranquility, serenity and silence. Clad in green Guatemalan marble, the spa offers bespoke treatments that are delivered with cutting-edge practices and ultra-premium products by Valmont, Cinq Mondes, or Kypwell brands. There are 8 treatment rooms, where guests can enjoy signature treatments like “Russian Banya”, Ayurveda, and Thai Massage. Other wellness facilities at the spa include a beautiful indoor pool area (with several sun loungers), hydrotherapy whirlpool, cold plunge pools, relaxation lounge, thermal saunas, steam rooms, aromatherapy experience showers, and Rasoul mud treatment chambers. The spa is also home to a hair salon, barber shop, a fully equipped, state-of-the-art Nautilus gym and a work out studio.
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resorts offers five dining options in addition to five bars & clubs. Several of these venues are located at Agora Village Square, a central meeting point at the heart of the resort, which features restaurants, cafes, an outdoor cinema, a high-end boutique and an upscale jewelry store.
    • Named after the Italian word for ‘flavours’, Sapori Restaurant offers a whistle-stop tour of Italy’s rich gastronomy in Cyprus. The intimate venue delivers a quintessential trattoria experience, with rustic stone walls and a mouth-watering menu of exceptional Italian fare garnished with hearty servings of world-class hospitality.
    • Next to Sapori is Bonsai, a casually elegant Teppanyaki Japanese restaurant that is open for dinner only and which has both indoor and outdoor dining areas. Its menu specializes in Teppanyaki dishes and Asian contemporary cuisine.
    • Commanding a prime spot on the 7th floor of the main building, Sky7 is the resort’s signature restaurant and hosts rotating Michelin starred chefs from across the world on selected dates. This makes the hotel a pioneer, as it is the first hotel on the island to work with Michelin chefs. The elevated gourmet experience is heightened with panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea during the day and breathtaking sunsets come evening.
    • Showcasing the cuisine and wines of Cyprus & Greece, Mesoyios is the resort’s all-day dining restaurant. Located under a canopy of olive trees, the seafront venue serves delicious meat, fish and seafood prepared in a variety of Mediterranean styles paying tribute to cuisines and cultures of the region.
    • Yeronisos Restaurant is the hotel’s breakfast restaurant. Each morning (till 11 am), an excellent buffet is on display on the venue’s Calcatta Gold marble buffet station. Guests can enjoy the breakfast on the terrace or in the dining room which features white oak pillars shaped like trees.
    • Gelato serves patisserie, hot and cold beverages, fast snacks, afternoon homemade gelato with fresh fruit, frozen yogurts, cypriot sweets, waffles or crepes.
    • Kohili is a beach bar located on a small deck overlooking the sea and beach surrounded by trees and shrubs offering besides all kind of beverages and cocktails as well as traditional snack meze dishes & tapas with Cyprus Wines.
    • Living up to its name, the sixth-floor  Chroma Lounge & Bar’s breathtaking panoramic sea views are complemented by unique design elements, with an elegant Nero Marquina marble bar and a show-stopping Lasvit chandelier.  Guests can enjoy a coffee, a cool drink or a snack here. The evening can be ended with a beautiful sunset accompanied by live music.
    • Located near the Olympic sized swimming pool is the Thalassa Pool Bar, the resort’s most popular spot for a drink or snack. The bar serves cocktail creations and spirits, a selection of iced draught beers, non-alcoholic drinks and hot beverages.
    • The resort is also home to vibrant and exhilarating club, which can be booked for special occasions and which is available for private functions.
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort offers several activities in the immediate area in case you can drag yourself out of the luxury enclave that the hotel is. Some examples:
    • The resort has its own ranch, so guests can arrange horse-riding via the concierge team. There are trails ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, as well as sunset rides along the sea. With a long history of excellence, the ranch offers a variety of programs, from one-on-one lessons to intermediate and advanced training.
    • With undulating hills and a rugged coastline, the landscape around Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort is a befitting exploration of the up-close-and-personal kind. Bicycle and buggy rentals are available to all guests so you can easily venture off the beaten track or along one of the dedicated cycling routes.
    • A fully serviced private yacht excursion offers a unique opportunity to explore the Akamas Peninsula and nearby National Park. Guests can escape into a world of crystal-clear waters as the captain takes them on a journey from coast to coast, stopping at remote sea caves and offering idyllic views along the way.
    • A private boat tour on a traditional fishing vessel offers an exclusive opportunity to experience Cypriot hospitality and  knowledge from the island’s local fishermen.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Cyprus is a visually stunning property that is sure to impress even the most discerning travelers with its palatial dimensions, top-notch service, world-class facilities and luxurious design. But some travelers might find that the resort lacks local charm and authenticity due to its ultra-modern architecture and sleek interiors (although the architects did try to incorporate some local elements in the overall design). Also, it is by no means an intimate property, so if you are looking for a small and intimate boutique hotel experience, you need to stay elsewhere.
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort is a mammoth hotel built on gigantic site, so it does take some time to get around and that often involves a combination of walks, stairs and elevators (although buggy service can be provided on request). The massive scale of the hotel allows for fewer crowds and a peaceful vibe but it can also make things a tad more challenging when it comes to organizing your days out on the beach or near the pool (this is not the place to have forgotten something in your room when you are on the beach).
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort is proud of its sustainable approach and green policies, but is still provides single-use plastics as toiletries in the bathrooms (albeit very good one, from the Lalique brand). It would be better if the hotel would change its in-room toiletries to larger refillable bottles, similar to what is found in other luxury hotels across the world.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Blessed with a sunny and mild Mediterranean climate, Cyprus is known as a year-round destination. The best time to visit the island is either side of the peak summer season, in the months of May, June, September and October. During these months, the temperatures are warm enough for swimming, but not uncomfortably hot and humid. Also, the crowds are much thinner, so it’s easier to enjoy the beaches & sights and you will not pay premium prices for a hotel room. During the winter months from November to March, you can expect mild weather, mostly sunny skies and some rainy days, making this a great period to explore the island’s historical sites.

  1. Looks nice, but indeed a bit generic. Surprised that you did not stay at the Anassa, the ultimate luxury hotel in Cyprus.
