Today: February 2024 luxury travel news

Every last Friday of the month, you can read my news round-up of what’s happening in the world of luxury travel. In this issue:

1. &Beyond launches expedition yacht in the Galapagos Islands

Conservation-led luxury travel company &Beyond (one of my favorite hotel brands) has announced the extension of its South America portfolio with the launch of an expedition yacht in the Galapagos Islands. Named the &Beyond Galapagos Explorer, the 38 m (124 ft) yacht will operate on two 7-night routes in the east and west of the famed Galapagos Islands. Boasting just six suites and cabins, the yacht will cater for a maximum of 12 guests, with two expert guides present on each departure. In addition to the highest level of guiding, the vessel will also offer beautifully appointed spacious indoor and outdoor guest areas, as well as four exquisite cabins and two luxury suites. The &Beyond Galapagos Explorer will set sail on its first departure on 17 June 2024. Situated on the equator, the Galapagos consists of 18 main islands, three smaller islands, and 107 rocks and islets. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1878, the islands are home to a remarkable variety of flora and fauna, with many species found nowhere else on earth. Notable species include the Galapagos giant tortoise, marine iguana, and blue-footed booby.

2. Capella announces a new luxury hotel in Taipei, Taiwan

Capella Hotels and Resorts announced the launch of Capella Taipei, opening at the end of 2024 and poised to become an urban sanctuary in the heart of Taipei’s vibrant Dunhua North Road. . Mere minutes from the 101 area, this 86-key luxurious retreat aims to offer a unique blend of city energy and serene elegance. Conceived by André Fu Studio, the hotel’s concept of a ‘modern mansion’ was birthed out of André’s personal reflection of Taipei – a modern city that juxtaposes between a world of vibrancy and poetic locality. Capella Taipei is set to be a pinnacle of culinary excellence, featuring the Grill, its main restaurant with innovative grilling, aging, and smoking techniques, offering sustainably sourced, farm-to-table produce with a French-inspired seasonal menu. Authentic Cantonese cuisine with Taiwanese influences and a premier Japanese Omakase restaurant will further enhance the dining experience. Guests will also have access to a spa with four treatment rooms, a fitness studio equipped with Technogym latest offerings, and an outdoor heated pool.

3. Etihad Airways introduces new luxury amenities across all cabins

Etihad Airways has launched a new collection of amenity kits and loungewear created in partnership with renowned Italian design house, Giorgio Armani, and luxury wellbeing brand ESPA. In addition, the UAE’s national airline has introduced a range of complimentary tote bags for guests on longer flights in Economy.

  • Etihad’s new Business Class amenity kits, designed by Giorgio Armani, come in two unisex styles – a clutch bag and a cube. The co-branded Giorgio Armani and Etihad unisex clutch bag features “The Dunes”, a contemporary print design drawing inspiration from the rolling sands of the stunning Liwa desert in Abu Dhabi. Following the flight, the bags can be used to conveniently store small tech products, cables, or personal items for convenience on the go. The kits are filled with luxury ESPA skincare products including lip balm, face mist, and body lotion, alongside convenient gifts including plush slippers, an eyeshade, earplugs and a travel dental kit.
  • Guests flying in The Residence, Etihad’s unique three-room private suite in the sky, and those in First Class will be treated to a stylish and highly desirable Giorgio Armani and Etihad branded large folio bag – one of the largest amenity kits in the sky. Collectable in four colours, the bag is perfect for use post flight to carry documents, tablets or even a 13” laptop, and will be a coveted accessory for all stylish travellers. The large folio bag comes packed with goodies from ESPA.
  • The Residence and First Class guests are also gifted bespoke Giorgio Armani and Etihad loungewear and slippers, beautifully presented in the large Giorgio Armani folio bag. The charcoal loungewear is soft to the touch, anti-wrinkle, and features a Henley neckline and bespoke tonal print inspired by the modern Abu Dhabi skyline, as well as matching trousers with pockets. In Business Class, Etihad takes Emirati design inflight with the new Etihad Business Class loungewear gifted to all guests on ultra-long haul flights over nine hours.
  • In Economy Class, passengers on flights over six hours are welcomed with a tote bag containing their inflight essentials, including gifts of Beekman hand cream, eyeshade and ear plugs. The fashionable tote comes in three collectible designs featuring the tailfin designs of Etihad’s iconic aircraft livery. Each bag is made from a 500ml PET bottle rescued from landfill. Packing the inflight amenities in the reusable bag also removes further single use plastics that would normally be used to pack the items individually.

4. Etihad Airways enables pilots to fly both A350 and A380 aircraft

After successfully obtaining rigorous regulatory approvals and completing thorough pilot training, Etihad has achieved the qualification for its pilots to seamlessly operate both Airbus A350 and A380 aircraft interchangeably. This milestone positions Etihad as one of the pioneering airlines globally to attain such versatility in its pilot capabilities. Airline pilots are typically restricted to flying only one aircraft type. However, under certain conditions such as high similarity of flight deck, pilot procedures, and the implementation of special training, pilots may be enabled to operate two similar aircraft types through a dedicated programme approved by the aircraft manufacturer and the Civil Aviation Authority, known as ‘Mixed Fleet Flying’ or ‘MFF’. Over the past decade, Etihad has obtained similar approvals to qualify its Airbus pilots to interchangeably fly the A320 and A330 types, A330 and A340 types, and its Boeing pilots to fly the 777 and 787 types, setting new standards for fleet commonality. Building on this legacy, the latest approval to fly both the Airbus A350 and A380 will further enhance the efficiency and flexibility of Etihad’s widebody network.

5. Iberia unveils sustainable amenity kits

Iberia has unveiled new toiletry bags designed by Teresa Helbig, inspired by her uniforms for Iberia and which will be available in Business and Premium Economy class on long-haul flights starting this summer. The bags’ design combines blue, red, and yellow. The sustainable toiletry bags include new natural and vegan cosmetic products, made entirely in Spain by Uvas Frescas, using surplus grapes from the wines selected by the Wine Club (Araex) and served on board Iberia flights, and with packaging made from sugar cane with I’m Green TM certification. They were produced by Kaelis by recycling 7.5 million 550ml plastic bottles, saving 1.2 million litres of water and reducing energy emissions by 70%. Additionally, these sustainable products are packaged by Envera, the Iberia employee association for parents of people with disabilities, which employs more than 400 people with disabilities. The Business Class toiletry bag includes, in addition to cosmetics, a pair of night socks, an eye mask, a toothbrush and toothpaste, earplugs, lip balm and hand cream. The bag that will be given to Premium Economy customers will include socks, a mask, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and earplugs.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

A few weeks ago, I took a trip to the Maldives and stayed at two of the country’s most exclusive resorts: The Ritz-Carlton Maldives and Patina Maldives. Both properties are located in the Fari Islands, a four-island man-made archipelago in the North Male Atoll, based a 45-minute boat ride from Velana International Airport. Read my trip reports here:

Today: Review of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands

If butler-serviced villas, private infinity pools, and overwater hammocks sound like your kind of getaway, put The Ritz-Carlton Maldives at the top of your wanderlist. You won’t find typical thatched-roof villas here. What you will find is 100 modern yet minimalist accommodations, plus seven restaurants and bars serving an array of global cuisines (including mimosas, bloody mary, and prosecco served with breakfast). There’s also a tennis court, dive center, kids’ club with napping pods and a children’s pool, as well as a floating spa perched right in the center of the lagoon. The resort is situated on Fari Islands, a man-made archipelago that features three other luxury properties as well as Fari Marina – the archipelago’s communal beating heart with a vibrant beach club, charming boutiques and a range of dining options.

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands features in my top 10 lists of the best Ritz-Carlton Hotels & Resorts in the world and the best resorts in the Maldives accessible by speedboat.

Have you ever stayed at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives ? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is located on the north-eastern tip of the North Malé Atoll, an area famous for its untouched white-sand beaches and brilliant azure waters teeming with marine life. The North Male Atoll is also home to the capital of the Maldives (Male) and the country’s main international airport, Velana International Airport. The Ritz-Carlton’s proximity to the airport ensures a quick and smooth transfer process after guests arrive in the Maldives, with the option of either a quick 10-minute seaplane flight (excluding waiting time at the airport) or a 45 min speedboat trip. While having the advantage of being easily accessible, the property is also one of the resorts in the North Male Atoll which are located the furthest away from the airport, so it feels very remote, serene and peaceful (contrary to the resorts closer to the airport which are affected by the sounds and sights of airplane traffic).
  • The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is set within an integrated development, called Fari Islands. The Fari Islands is a man-made archipelago consisting of four islands, with one dedicated island hosting the hotel staff and the other islands hosting three luxury resorts: The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, The Patina Maldives, and The Capella Maldives (scheduled to complete the grand plan in 2027). Each island was individually designed to be set back in privacy, framed by the Maldives’ turquoise blue waters, clear views to the east, and sunsets to the west, while also allowing the natural flow of the sea current within the lagoon. Bucking the tradition of Maldivian resorts being developed on a single, solitary island, the Fari Islands offers guests freedom of movement across all resorts and facilities, and access to a wide range of amenities catering to different age groups, cultural backgrounds, and vacationing expectations.
  • Appearing from above as if a collection of futuristic spaceships has landed in a lagoon in the Indian Ocean, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is a relatively small resort with a convenient layout, comprised of three artificial islands and a circular overwater jetty, all connected via one walkway. The northernmost island is home to beach villas and three man-made beaches, while the southernmost island – the largest island – harbors the main beach club, gym, kids-club and some more beach villas. In between both islands is a third, tiny islet which is home to a stunning communal pool area and a collection of dining facilities (hence why it is known as the ‘culinary island’). On the far northern end of the property is a circular jetty with dozens of overwater villas as well as a fabulous spa at its center. All guests get bikes to get around the property (it only takes 10 minutes to get from one end of the resort to the other). 24/7 Buggy service is also provided.
  • Designed by multi-award winning, Australia-based Kerry Hill Architects, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is inspired by the elements of swirling water and ocean breezes, which are incorporated into a design narrative that is rooted in the flow of island life. The resort’s minimalist design is respectful of its visual impact on the environment and draws much of its natural surroundings into the guest experience. The property’s iconic round-shaped architecture – which has featured on the cover of countless travel magazines – resembles Beru, or drum in the local language, closely related to Bodu Beru, an indigenous form of dance and music with drums (crafted from coconut wood). According to the architects, the “design embraces the dual personality of the site, balancing the open ocean and calm lagoon, daytime shade and expansive night sky, and contemplative and active spaces”.
  • The Ritz-Carlton Maldives features 100 luxurious one- to three-bedroom villas, either set over the crystal clear waters of the lagoon or nestled along pristine beach coves. During my holiday, I stayed in a Lagoon Pool Villa. which was located on the overwater’s jetty sunset side. The round-shaped villa comprised a spacious, high-ceilinged bedroom with kingsize bed, with a sitting & dining area on one side and a marble deepsoaking bathtub on the other. The ensuite bathroom was equipped with double vanity, indoor & outdoor showers, and a separate toilet. The bedroom featured large panoramic sliding doors, which could be completely openend, blurring the line between the indoors & outdoors. Beyond the bedroom was a large shaded sun deck with a private infinity pool and breathtaking views. The villa’s calming yet bright interiors put the focus on nature, with cream stone and blond woods contrasting with the Maldives’ vivid blues of sea and sky.
  • With seven distinct culinary venues, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands strikes the perfect balance between high-end dining, beachfront luxury, and wellness-centered menus:
    • Housed within a beautiful lantern-inspired overwater space, Summer Pavilion takes inspiration from The Ritz-Carlton Millenia, Singapore’s Michelin-starred restaurant, showcasing contemporary Cantonese cuisine.
    • Set along the main pool, Iwau, or ‘celebrate’ in Japanese, is an open-air restaurant with two teppanyaki grills for a multi-sensory dining experience.
    • La Locanda serves a sumptuous breakfast in the morning (buffet + à la carte), while aperitifs in the setting sun preludes an evening of delightful southern Italian cuisine.
    • The family-friendly Beach Shack – set along the main beach – is inspired by the carefree spirit and relaxed cuisines of the Mediterranean, featuring shared plates and grilled seafoods.
    • Eau Bar welcomes guests to a laid-back pool-side setting, where guests can indulge in fresh oysters and caviar while sipping on tableside crafted cocktails. The bar is especially beautiful at sunset, which is celebrated each evening with a captivating drums and fire ritual.
    • Two of the resort’s venues are located at Fari Marina, a pleasant eight-minute journey in a dhoni, a traditional wooden fishing boat, from the resort island. Arabesque is an eye-catching tribute to a traditional Bedouin tent, inviting diners on a culinary journey from Lebanon to North India. Tum Tum is a food truck serving light Asian delights; the perfect welcome stop in the middle of a day of shopping and exploration.
  • At the resort, guests can enjoy an array of experiences designed to immerse them in the best of Maldivian island life and culture, including exciting adventures with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment Program. Activated for the first time in Asia-Pacific, this unique brand program inspires guests to connect with nature and ocean life, and to safeguard it for future generations. The programming available at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives highlights the unique ecosystem of the destination through immersive experiences designed for children, adults and local residents, including a family cooking class, a bike safari around the resort and a “Wonders of Water” ocean mystery program facilitated by one of the program’s resident naturalists. The resort also caters to all levels of scuba enthusiasts and snorkelers with a dedicated dive center in partnership with Dive Butler International.
  • For a complete luxury wellness experience, The Ritz-Carlton Spa, in partnership with renowned sustainable and holistic wellness brand Bamford, is a sanctuary of tranquil relaxation over the turquoise lagoon. Housed in a striking overwater structure, the iconic spa offers nine treatment rooms including a spa suite with its own relaxation lounge, a salon and a boutique. Cardinal directions of each treatment room exude powerful energy, and a menu of bespoke spa treatments and healing massages also features a botanical and artisanal body and skincare collection by Bamford.
  • At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, families and young guests are invited to engage with the destination through Ritz Kids. Designed for those ages 4 to 12, the program uses its four pillars – land, water, environmental responsibility and culture – to create a schedule of daily activities including sports, arts and crafts, cooking classes and more. The experience is based out of the Ritz Kids Club, futuristic indoor-outdoor space with playgrounds, napping pods, an area for video games and movies, and a pool with slides and jets. Babysitting service is available at a charge, upon request.
  • The resort is managed by the famous Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. After its launch in 1983, the company began to expand, adding new properties across the USA. Within two years, the brand had opened five hotels, including The Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, The Ritz-Carlton Atlanta, The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel and The Ritz-Carlton Naples. This rapid expansion continued, and by 1992, Ritz-Carlton had expanded to 23 luxury hotels, earning its first Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The following year, they opened their first hotel in Asia, The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong. In 1998, the Ritz-Carlton brand was purchased by Marriott. Since this purchase, Ritz-Carlton has continued to grow, providing exceptional service and genuine care to their guests in the most desirable destinations on earth.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is set on a man-made island, which was built using sand scooped from the ocean floor and layered atop living coral reefs, mimicking a process that usually takes thousands of years. To ensure the construction was as sustainable as possible, marine biologists were brought in to work alongside the architects. Damage-reduction measures included covering the existing reef with silt nets to protect the corals from suffocating sand and dust, examining the currents to avoid interfering with natural flow patterns and stopping construction during the important coral-spawning season. Nonetheless, there is an ongoing debate around this type of construction and the amount of damage it might inflict upon the environment. I am not an environmental expert of course, but if sustainability is something you care about (and you should), you might not feel at peace here.
  • Regardless of the fact whether the construction of a man-made island resort on a living coral reef is a responsible thing to do in times of environmental protection, the “natural look” of the island is also vastly different from that of the Maldives’ stunningly beautiful natural islands. The vegetation at the island’s center is not as lush compared to the soaring jungle of coconut palms you’ll find at the natural islands (although I assume the vegetation will mature over time). The resort’s man-made beaches (with a rough type of sand) can’t compete with the magic and spectacular beauty of the soft white sand beaches on natural islands. If it’s your first visit to the Maldives, you will still be blown away by the tropical scenery, but if you are a repeat visitor the Maldives (like me), the setting might disappoint you.
  • The Ritz-Carlton Maldives doesn’t feature a house reef and as such will not appeal to snorkelers. The nearest reefs to the resort are only accessible by boat, so you’ll need to join one of the daily excursions if you want to see any meaningful sea life such as turtles and sharks. On select days, these trips are offered as a group trip but you can also book your private boat with your own guide at a time of your choosing.
  • The overwater villas on the resort’s sunset side are the most romantic accommodations on the island, but they are not completely private. They look out over the vast lagoon surrounding the resort, but they also look out over the waterway that’s used by boats to shuttle guests between the airport and the nearby Patina Maldives Resort. The boat traffic itself isn’t very disturbing (only two to three boats per hour, mostly during the day) but nonetheless, the people traveling on these boats have a clear look into the overwater villas’ terraces and interiors. If privacy is a must for you, you’re better off booking an overwater villa on the island’s sunrise side (where there is no boat traffic).
  • Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by the General Manager, who was happy to inform me that I was upgraded to a Lagoon Pool Villa. However, that was the exact villa type that I had booked and paid for. I didn’t say anything at the time as not to spoil the moment, but it did not make for a great first impression.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best weather in the Maldives is between January and April, which also means high season (with low availability and high room rates). The monsoon runs from May to October, peaking in June. It is worth paying higher prices and sticking to the dry season as there is nothing to do on a rainy day except drink, eat, work out or scuba dive. Especially November and December, which are often labelled as dry season months, have been very unsettled in recent years.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is easily reachable by a 50 min speedboat ride or 10 min seaplane flight from Male International Airport (MLE). Check the Wikipedia page of Male International Airport for an updated list of airlines that offer flights to Male International Airport.

Today: Top 10 best Ritz-Carlton Hotels & Resorts in the world

With an unshakeable credo and corporate philosophy of un-wavering commitment to service, The Ritz-Carlton is one of the most famous brands in the world of luxury travel and has been recognized with countless awards for being the gold standard of hospitality. The first Ritz-Carlton in America — The Ritz-Carlton, Boston — opened in 1927, playing host to jazz great Cole Porter, playwright Tennessee Williams, Winston Churchill and the like in its early Gilded Age days. Bolstered by the reputation of its European big sisters — The Ritz Paris and The Carlton in London, both managed by hotel legend Cesar Ritz — the hotel helped Americans first experience the meaning of luxury and style in travel and dining, and then came to define it. Today, the Ritz-Carlton Company is a subsidiary of the Marriott Hotel Group and operates more than 100 properties across the globe. Here’s my selection of the 10 best Ritz-Carlton Hotels & Resorts that most impressed me during all my years of traveling.

Showcasing the architecture and craftsmanship of the area, each of the 60 luxury suites and villas features a private outdoor space (some of them with pools) with views of the river or surrounding scenery. Four restaurants serve health-conscious cuisine sourced from the organic garden, although you can also arrange a romantic dinner overlooking the river or rice terrace. If butler-serviced villas, private infinity pools, and overwater hammocks sound like your kind of getaway, put The Ritz-Carlton Maldives – my favorite Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the world – at the top of your wanderlist.

Today: Review of British Airways’ B777 Club Suite (Business Class) from London to the Maldives

Over the past years, British Airways introduced a new Business Class seat – called Club Suite – onboard its Airbus A350, Boeing 787-10 and select refurbished Boeing 777 aircraft. The new product – which ranks among my favorite longhaul Business Class seats – offers direct-aisle access, a door for greater privacy, and luxurious flat-beds in a 1-2-1 configuration. Together with the introduction of its new Club Suite, British Airways also dramatically improved its onboard service concepts, with catering from DO & CO and  excellent bedding from The White Company. It was my second flight in British Airways’ Club Suite to the Maldives (you can read the review of my first flight here) and I really enjoyed the entire flight experience (except for Heathrow’s overcrowded lounges).

Have you ever flown British Airways’ Business Class suite (‘Club Suite’)? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

  • Trip: London (LHR) to Male (MLE)
  • Airline: British Airways
  • Aircraft type: Boeing 777-300ER
  • Aircraft registration number: G-STBD (built in 2011)
  • On time departure: 6:30 pm
  • On time arrival: 9:30 am (+ 1 day)
  • Miles: 5300 miles (8530 km)
  • Flight time: 10 hours
  • Seat: 13A
  • Class: Business Class

1. COST OF MY TICKET

I paid 3100 euros (inclusive of taxes) for my Business Class ticket from Frankfurt to Male (via a stopover in London). The ticket was booked directly on the British Airways’ website during an online sales period.

2. LOUNGE AT LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT

London Heathrow is comprised of several terminals. Terminal 5 – the UK’s largest free-standing building –  is exclusively used by British Airways. Opened in 2008, Terminal 5 is designed to handle 35 million passengers a year and the complex took almost 20 years from conception to completion. The main terminal building is referred to as Terminal 5A, while there are also two satellite buildings, Terminal 5B & 5C (reached via an underground rail link). The latter are mainly used for longhaul operations.

British Airways operates several lounges within Terminal 5:

  • Three Business Class lounges, with two located on the north and south side of the main building and one in satellite Terminal 5B. These lounges are called Galleries North, Galleries South and B gates lounges respectively, and they are open to Business Class passengers and Sapphire members of a frequent flyer program of one of the Oneworld
  • A First Class lounge located one floor below the South Galleries, which is open to Emerald members of any of the Oneworld airline frequent flyer programs.
  • The famous Concorde Room is British Airways’ most exclusive lounge, open only to its First Class passengers. The Concorde Room features hotel-style rooms with beds and ensuite bathrooms, plus restaurant-style dining. I previously reviewed the Concorde Room here.

This article only reviews British Airways’ flagship Galleries South Lounge, which is located one floor above the main concourse.  The lounge is accessed via a set of escalators, which are located under an impressive work of art that’s hanging from the ceiling and comprised of dots which were used as airport signage in the 1970s. The lounge’s entrance features an Airbus A380 model as well as a giant horse statue with a lamp on its head.

The lounge itself is massive and split into different sections, with separate areas for relaxing (which are centered around several self-serve bar areas), dining and working. The lounge is decorated in British Airways’ signature style, featuring mood lighting, oak wooded floors, elegant furniture, and a neutral color palette. Enormous floor-to-ceiling windows offer A decent buffet is on display right behind the lounge’s entrance and it offers soup, sandwiches, fruits, nachos, salads, and some hot (curry) dishes. The lounge offers excellent facilities, including a customer service counter, luggage room, business center, showers and a kids play area.

Unfortunately, the lounge can get extremely busy in peak hours despite its enormous size. For example, during my visit, there was almost no seat available anymore in the lounge, so what was supposed to be a relaxing visit turned into a frustrating experience. If possible, I recommend to skip this lounge and instead visit British Airways’ B gates lounge in the satellite Terminal 5B (although, unfortunately, it’s impossible to know upfront from what satellite terminal your flight will leave as the screens in the airport only announce the departure gates about one hour prior to the scheduled flight time).

3. BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

British Airways’ retrofitted Boeing 777-300ERs are equipped with the carrier’s newest Business Class product, called ‘Club Suite’. These aircraft feature 76 Business Class seats – with sliding doors – which are spread over 3 cabins: a small front cabin (with 12 seats), a large middle cabin (with 42 seats) and an aft cabin (22 seats). The seats are laid out in a spacious 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone configuration, with direct aisle access for every passenger. Herringbone takes its name from the angled look of the seats when viewed from above on a seat map: the seats on the sides angle out toward the windows, while the seats in the center angle toward one another. Obviously, the center seats are the best choice for travel companions although these seats feature extendable dividers in case you are seated next to a strangers (guaranteeing complete privacy).

The three Business Class cabins onboard British Airways’ retrofitted Boeing 777-300ERs feature an absolutely gorgeous design. The cabin feels chic, airy and spacious, and British Airways’ stylish logo prominently features on a panel in the front of each cabin. Designed with silver, grey, and charcoal hued fabrics by UK company Hainsworth, the seats look luxurious, and they are also finished with Muirhead leather (which covers the ottoman and arm caps).

4. BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (+ BEST & WORST SEATS)

British Airways has chosen the Collins Aerospace Super Diamond seat for its Club Suite Business Class product. The seat – which has a width of 22 inches (56 cm) – can also be found on other carrier’s such as Etihad Airways’ A350s.  Contrary to British Airways’ older Business Class seats, the new Club Suite comes with a sliding door for enhanced privacy. The door is fixed in the open position during take-off and landing, but during cruise, the flight attendants release the locking mechanism and you can leave the door open or closed. The door is ‘only’ 44 inches (112 cm) tall, so it still allows the crew to peer over and check in with you as needed.

In front of the seat is a 18.5-inch HD entertainment screen (more on that below) and a footrest located in the space below the TV screen. A tray table is stowed under the TV at a good height to maximize legroom; it needs to be pulled out for any use and when unfolded, it measures 16 x 18 inches (40 x 46 cm).

Above the non-aisle armrest is a small touchscreen, which can be used to adjust the seat position and to control the lighting of the suite during the flight. This side of the seat also features two storage units to stow away smaller personal items (e.g. glasses, wallet, smartphones, etc …). The largest cubby holds a handset for the inflight entertainment, a USB port, and a power plug. Next to the seatback is a large console with a vanity mirror and some more storage space on the inside; a reading light is fixed to the console’s outside wall.

At the push of a button, the seat can convert into a very comfy bed with a length of 79 inches (200 cm).

What are the best Business Class Club Suites?

  • Solo travelers should choose one of the window seats.
  • Travel companions should go for the middle seats. However, due to how private they are, they really don’t lend themselves all that well for traveling with a partner, as you have to lean forward when you want to have a chat (the consoles of both seats are located in the middle).

What are the worst Business Class suites?

  • Most Club Suites on the Boeing 777 have two windows but there are some that only have one (due to the size of the suites). For example, the seats in row 7 and 12 have only one window and are not ideal if you are a person who enjoys taking in the views during a flight.
  • I suggest to avoid the last row of the front mini-cabin (row 7) and the front row of the second cabin (row 8) due to their proximity to the galley and lavatories.
  • I also suggest to avoid the last row of Business Class (row 23) which is in front of the Premium Economy Class bassinet seats.

5. AMENITIES & BEDDING

Business Class passengers get the following amenities during a British Airways longhaul flight:

  • A Club World amenity kit, which comes in the form of an elegantly designed bag from The White Company. The kit contains eyeshade, earplugs, socks, a toothbrush, toothpaste, pen and toiletries from The White Company’s Restore & Relax Spa Collection, offering a touch of luxury in the sky.
  • Excellent bedding, also provided by The White Company, which comprises:
    • a soft large pillow in a white cotton pillowcase;

6. MEALS

During this flight, two meals were served: a dinner after takeoff and a breakfast prior to landing. Overall, the food was good but I felt it could have been better and a little bit more sophisticated, especially for a premium product. Also, the dinner service was extremely slow: the starter was only served after more than two hours in the flight and we were already flying above the Black Sea when the dessert was served (3 hours and 30 minutes after takeoff). It’s disappointing that British Airways’ mediocre food offering doesn’t match its excellent Club Suite hard product.

I choose the following dinner selection from the stylish bistro-style menu:

  • Starter: roasted cauliflower soup, garlic, herb croutons
  • Main course: British chicken supreme, oven roasted broccolini, baby bell pepper, fennel, carrot, truffle gnocchi
  • Dessert: British apple crumble, apple compote

Breakfast was served 90 minutes prior to landing, and started with a fresh orange juice, seasonal fruit and blueberry & banana super bowl. As a main course, I had the full British breakfast with scrambled eggs, pork sausage, back bacon, button mushroom and grilled tomato.

7. ENTERTAINMENT

British Airways’ Club Suite seat has an 18.5-inch TV screen which uses the latest Panasonic X3 in-flight entertainment system. The screen is fixed into the shell of the seat in front (or the bulkhead for the front seats), allowing gate-to-gate entertainment (which is not the case with British Airways’ older Business Class seats where the screen needs to be popped back into place prior to takeoff or landing). The inflight entertainment can be selected by directly touching the TV screen or with the use of a handset, which has its own small TV screen. The entertainment system itself, called High Life, offers tons of movies and box sets to explore. 3D Interactive GeoFusion flight maps are available, allowing passengers to follow the flight route in hi-resolution graphics.

Today: Top 10 most romantic luxury hotels in the world

For love birds, February 14th holds a special meaning as Valentine’s day is all about making a big show of love, affection, and romance. One of the best ways to celebrate love is by staying at a fabulously romantic hotel with your special someone. For some travelers, a romantic escape is all about decadent luxury, private dining, and poolside spa treatments. For others, it means a getaway into a remote wilderness spot surrounded by pristine scenery (count me in). And then of course, there are the exciting-seeking romantic souls who prefer sensational thrills and high-adrenaline sports over relaxation and pampering. Whatever your preference, here’s my top 10 list of the world’s most romantic hotels, where lovers can reconnect together.

There is more info (with reviews and YouTube videos) below my slideshow. Think I missed one? Share your favorite romantic hotel in the comments section.

10. TAJ LAKE PALACE, UDAIPUR, INDIA

Rising like a mirage from Lake Pichola, the white-marble-and-mosaic Taj Lake Palace beckons to travelers. The palace itself dates back to 1746, when it was built by Maharana Jagat Singh II. Today, guests are treated like royalty by an entourage of butlers who ensure that every creature comfort is provided. Recreational facilities include a pool, traditional cultural performances, heritage walk of the palace, yoga & meditation, astrology, Bazar, private boat rides, bird watching, and romantic sunset cruises on Lake Pichola. There’s also an intimate spa, which draws rich idioms from millennia-old Indian wellness and healing therapies, resulting in a menu of aromatherapy massages, body scrubs and wraps that are sure to rejuvenate even the weariest body. From mid-October to mid-April, the hotel’s rooftop Bhairo restaurant is open and serves contemporary European cuisine with spectacular lake views.

9. POST RANCH INN, BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA, USA

Nestled high above the cliffs of Big Sur, the acclaimed Post Ranch Inn ‘floats’ 400 m (1200 ft) above the Pacific Ocean encircled by towering redwoods, majestic mountains and panoramic ocean vistas. With natural architecture embracing the coast’s dramatic beauty and the surrounding forests, the 39 rooms blend rustic elegance, comfort and privacy with panoramic ocean or mountain views. Each room features a wood-burning fireplace, private deck and complimentary minibar. The hotel’s restaurant Sierra Mar is renowned for its exquisite food, and features floor to ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the Pacific Coast. There’s also a luxurious spa on site, offering pampering treatments to help ease away tension and relax muscles. From the hotel, guests can explore all that Big Sur’s incredible nature has to offer, or take a short drive to the picturesque towns of Monterey and Carmel.

8. HÔTEL DE CRILLON, A ROSEWOOD HOTEL, PARIS, FRANCE

Originally built in 1758, Hôtel de Crillon enjoys an unrivaled position overlooking Paris’ Place de la Concorde. The property reopened in 2018 as a Rosewood Hotel after undergoing an extensive four-year restoration, its past providing a rich backdrop for its modern-day story. During the hotel’s closure, artisans and designers worked tirelessly to strike a deliberate and delicate balance between conservation and transformation. The hotel’s 78 rooms, 36 suites and 10 signature suites embody an expressly Parisian residential style that is equally warm and refined. Karl Lagerfeld, renowned designer and a great 18th century admirer, has decorated two exceptional suites on Place de la Concorde – together called “Les Grands Appartements” – which convey his personal vision of French chic and modernity. Hôtel de Crillon also features fine dining venues, a newly created pool area, and a spa.

  • Hotel websiteHôtel de Crillon, a Rosewood Hotel
  • Other accolades: Hôtel De Crillon, a Rosewood Hotel, features in my top 10 lists of the best luxury hotels in Paris.
  • Tip: get complimentary VIP perks when booking via Virtuoso (e.g. room upgrade, daily breakfast, early check-in, late check-out, and $100 USD food & beverage credit).
  • Review: read my review of Hôtel de Crillon here.

7. THE BRANDO, FRENCH POLYNESIA

The Brando is an ultra-romantic luxury resort on French Polynesia’s breathtakingly beautiful private island of Tetiaroa – an atoll composed of a dozen small islands surrounding a sparkling lagoon 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Tahiti. The Brando offers carefree luxury in the midst of pristine nature and is designed to reflect Polynesian lifestyles and culture. With access to the island by private plane, the resort features 35 villas on white-sand beaches frequented by sea turtles, manta rays and exotic birds. Guests can snorkel or dive with tropical fish, sail in the lagoon, paddle board to a neighboring island, take a kayak above coral gardens, stroll the long stretches of beach, enjoy a guided or unguided marine excursion, or simply spend a day in the spa and wellness center. It was in this natural wonderland that the legendary actor Marlon Brando settled down, and finally found his home.

6. KATIKIES SANTORINI, GREECE

Katikies – a complex of bridges, cubist cottages and infinity pools – is considered one of the most romantic boutique hotels in Santorini. Hugging the dramatic volcanic rim, the property is a natural fit for honeymooners, romantics and couples. The white washed suites have classic arched ceilings and majestic views of the Aegean Sea, which can be enjoyed from the large terrace with an open-air dining area, sun deck and two-person Jacuzzi. For the ultimate romantic meal, the restaurant provides the perfect setting with just four candlelit tables perched on a secret verandah rooftop overlooking the Caldera. The better-known Kirini pool restaurant offers the same breathtaking panoramas, plus a fresh, seasonal menu of traditional Mediterranean dishes. Awe inspiring views, sublime Santorini sunsets and perfectly manicured pink bougainvilleas provide the magnificent backdrop for this perennially gleaming, glistening white luxury hotel that spills down the cliffs of the impressive caldera.

5. THE SILO CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

The Silo Hotel is a magical space, towering above the V&A Waterfront and surrounded by the scenery of South Africa’s Mother City. The hotel has been built in the grain elevator portion of a historic grain silo complex, occupying the six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), which rivals the likes of the Tate Modern in London and Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. The exterior of the building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio. Guests can watch the bustle below while soaking in a freestanding tub in one of 28 lofty rooms, designed with a bold mix of colors, prints, and textures. Champagne and carving trolleys roll through the hotel’s signature restaurant The Granary Café, and the spa is sumptuously serene. A highlight of the hotel is its spectacular wraparound rooftop terrace, which features an infinity pool, two bars and several lounge areas.

4. AMAN VENICE, ITALY

Neo-Renaissance grandeur meets refined modern aesthetics at Aman Venice. As sumptuous and romantic as the city itself, the hotel is located within a phenomenal 16th-century Palazzo Papadopolion on the Grand Canal. Currently the most (ultra)luxurious property in the city, the hotel is home to museum-quality treasures including Tiepolo frescoes, gilded ceilings and centuries-old leather wall coverings. A private water transfer delivers guests to the resort’s dramatic reception hall, with direct access to its private gardens (rare for this city). More home than hotel, Aman Venice offers the rare privilege of space in the center of the Floating City. High ceilings and spacious light-filled salons are joined by two mature outdoor private gardens and a small rooftop rarely seen in the city. With views to the hotel’s private garden or the Grand Canal, many of the 24 rooms and suites feature protected frescos and reliefs. The hotel is managed by Aman, one of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands.

3. JADE MOUNTAIN, ST LUCIA

From its inception, Jade Mountain has been hailed as the Caribbean’s most romantic hotel. Architect owner Nick Troubetzkoy has expanded upon his philosophy of building in harmony with Caribbean nature in his creation of Jade Mountain. The bold architectural design – individual bridges leading to exceptional infinity pool sanctuaries and rugged stoned-faced columns reaching towards the sky – makes Jade Mountain one of the Caribbean’s most mesmerizing resort experiences. The location of the property is unsurpassed, rising majestically above the private estate of Anse Chastanet with 600 lush tropical acres bordering two soft, sand Caribbean beaches with pristine coral reefs just off shore. With the fourth wall entirely absent, Jade Mountain’s 29 suites (called “sanctuaries”) are stage-like settings from which to embrace the full glory of  St Lucia’s twin peaks, the Pitons World Heritage Site, and of course, the eternal Caribbean Sea.

2. ZANNIER HOTELS SONOP

The opulence and finesse of Zannier Hotels Sonop, set in Namibia’s southwest corner, immediately recalls the 1920’s era of British explorers. Constructed on top of granite boulders, the tented camp enjoys a remote and unspoilt setting in 13,800 acres (5,600 hectares) of untouched wilderness. Every object and antique in the lodge’s ten spacious tents are carefully selected – binoculars and maps, travelers’ tales, telescopes, antique desks and handmade stationary – to ensure that every moment turns into a unique experience. The romantic hotel captures the restorative essence of the desert landscape with a spectacular open-air infinity pool, spa, fitness center and daily yoga. Guided excursions include horse-riding from our own stables, private dining atop of the sand dunes, electric fat-bike or walking trails, and private sunset safaris. The magic continues after dark with a nightly gala-style dinner, open-air cinema and stargazing under the endless African skies.

1. SONEVA JANI, MALDIVES

Located on an uninhabited five-island cluster in the Noonu Atoll, the Maldives’ most romantic hotel is fringed by pristine beaches, blanketed with lush tropical greenery, and surrounded by a 5.6 km (3,4 mi) lagoon of crystal clear waters with uninterrupted Indian Ocean views. The world-famous resort features 51 overwater pool villas, spread along two jetties that curve into a 5.6 km (3,4 mi) magnificent lagoon of crystal clear waters. Known as the North Jetty and South Jetty, both jetties are connected to the Maldives’ largest resort island, a tropical paradise fringed by pristine beaches and blanketed with lush tropical greenery. Highlights at Soneva Jani include the villas’ retractable roofs, private water slides, a wide range of sublime restaurants, personalized experiences & excursions, and a spectacular new spa facility, Soneva Soul. When booking Soneva Unlimited, guests can benefit from an all-inclusive way to experience the best of the resort.

Today: Edelweiss Air Airbus A340 Business Class from Zürich to Male

A few weeks ago, I traveled with friends to the Maldives. I flew with British Airways onboard a Boeing 777 equipped with the carrier’s newest Business Class cabin with sliding doors (I’ll publish my trip report & video of this journey next week). My friends traveled in Business Class with Edelweiss Air, a Swiss leisure airline and a sister company of Swiss International Air Lines (also known as SWISS). I asked my friends to take some videos & photos of their onboard experience (I believe they did a pretty good job, so kudos to them).

For its longhaul flights, Edelweiss Air uses A340 aircraft, which feature a Business Class cabin that is similar to the one offered by SWISS (albeit styled in a different design). A major difference with SWISS though is Edelweiss Air’s onboard soft product, which feels less sophisticated (especially when it comes to the rather disappointing onboard catering). That said, Edelweiss Air offers one of  the best value Business Class products on many leisure routes, with fares that are often significantly lower compared to the cost charged by other airlines on the same route.

Have you ever flown with Edelweiss Air? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

  • Trip: Zürich, Switzerkand (ZRH) to Velana International Airport (MLE)
  • Airline: Edelweiss Air
  • Aircraft type: Airbus A340-300
  • Aircraft registration number:  HB-JMD (built in 2003)
  • On time departure: yes (12 pm)
  • On time arrival: yes (6 pm)
  • Miles: 4850 miles (7810 km)
  • Flight time: 11 hours
  • Seat: 14K
  • Class: Business Class

  8. My verdict (score)

1. ABOUT EDELWEISS AIR

Edelweiss Air, which has its hub at Zürich Airport, was founded in 1995 and has been part of the Lufthansa Group since 2008. The company’s name is derived from the Swiss national flower, the Edelweiss, which is also painted on its aircraft. Edelweiss Air serves dozens of leisure destinations in more than 30 countries worldwide with a fleet of thirteen Airbus A320 and five Airbus A340 aircraft. Edelweiss  Air is currently acquiring six Airbus A350 aircraft (previously operated by LATAM Airlines), which will join the airline’s fleet in a staggered manner from summer 2025. By the end of 2026, the existing five Airbus A340 long-haul aircraft will be replaced by the A350s and Edelweiss’ long-haul fleet will be restored to pre-Corona levels.

2. BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

In a somewhat unusual configuration, Edelweiss Air’s A340 Business Class cabin is located in the middle of the plane, over the wings (and not in the plane’s front section). The Business Class cabin features 27 flatbed seats, spreads over 6 rows and arranged in an alternating 1-2-1 and 2-2-1 layout (a so called staggered configuration or Sogerma Solstys layout). This layout feels rather dense as the foot compartment for each seat is located between and under the seats in front. The center seats come in pairs, while the seats on the left and right side of the plane alternate from 1 to 2 per row.

The same staggered Business Class layout is also installed on Brussels Airlines’ A330, Finnair’s A330/A340SWISS’ A340/A330Delta’s B767, and American’s B767 aircrafts. This configuration offers some degree of privacy as none of the seat rows quite line up, so nobody is directly looking into the seat across the aisle. But nonetheless, the privacy in this type of Business Class cabin is inferior compared to the fully enclosed Business Class suites that you find on other airlines, such as Air France’s B777, Qatar’s A350sBritish Airways’ reconfigured Boeing 777s, or Delta’s A350s (and which seem to become the standard in the industry).

3. BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (+ BEST & WORST SEATS)

The Business Class seats onboard Edelweiss’ Airbus A340 aircraft have a pitch of 152 cm (60 inches), a width of 50 cm (19,5 inch), and a recline of 180 degree. All seats have at least one large work surface on the side (where you can set up your laptop), with some single seats and some paired seats featuring this work space on both sides (a so-called ‘throne seat’). One side of the seat features a power port with international adapters, a reading lamp (at eye level), a panel for the seat controls, and a standard wired handset (located below a flap in the armrest). The console on this side of the seat also holds the fold-out tray table, which is released at the push of a button. In front of the seat is a HD entertainment screen (more on that below) with a foot compartment underneath.

The seat can be transformed in a Lantal air-cushion bed with a length of 2 m (6.5 ft). Although it’s a 180 degree recline, the seat and your lower legs descend into a space carved out for it in the seat(s) in front, below the entertainment screen. This foot compartment is quite narrow, making it hard to switch position during your sleep while not waking up, as your legs might hit the walls. The seats that do not have the ‘throne’ feature have more space for the feet, hence making them a little more comfortable for sleeping. In its lie flat position, the Business Class seat is just 45 cm (17 inch) above the floor, making it feel like you are resting on the ground or in a coffin (because of the high seat walls), and making it rather uncomfortable getting in and out to go to the restroom.

What are the best Business Class seats on Edelweiss Air’s A340s?

  • The single best seats for solo travelers are the single seats on the left side of the plane, which feature a large work space on each side of the seat (so called ‘throne seats’): 11A, 14A, and 16A.
  • The single seats on the right side of the plane are a great option as well for solo travelers, but they feel less private since they only feature one instead of two work spaces on the side. These seats have the largest foot compartment and are best for sleep comfort.
  • Travel companions should go for the paired, middle seats, which all have direct aisle access. There are also paired window seats in rows 12, 15 and 17 on the left side of the plane, but the passenger in the window seat will have to jump over their neighbor’s feet to get access to aisle.

What are the worst Business Class seats

  • I suggest to avoid the seats in the first row (row 11) of the Business Class cabin since the proximity to the galley may be bothersome.
  • I also suggest to avoid the seats in the last row (row 17),  since these seats are directly in front of the Economy Class bassinet seats (so you may end up being close to young children or babies).
  • The window seats in row 15 are missing a window and thus best avoided.

4. AMENITIES & BEDDING

Edelweiss Air provides the following amenities to its Business Class passengers:

  • An amenity kit, whose packaging is made of cardboard with 70% recycled content. The kit contains basic travel amenities, such as socks, a sleeping mask, shoehorn, toothbrush, toothpaste, and earplugs (toiletries are not provided).
  • A decently sized pillow
  • A comfortable, warm blanket
  • Noise cancelling headphones (you cannot keep them as the crew collects them before landing)

5. MEALS

On this flight, a three course dinner (after takeoff) and breakfast (prior to landing) were served. The dinner was disappointing and rather uninspiring for a Business Class product (breakfast was only slightly better). Unfortunately, the mediocre food service – with the tiny food portions – seems to be a constant isssue with Edelweiss Air (as this was also the case during my previous two flights with the carrier).  The food service is definitely not en pair with that of Switzerland’s legandary culinary reputation and just feels cheap.

The dinner menu read as follows:

  • Starter: roast beef served with wasabi potato mousse, parsnip and apple gel
  • Main course: pan-seared char filet served with walnut butter, artichoke ragout and beans

Today: Top 10 safest airlines in the world for 2024

Commercial aviation is regarded as one of the safest forms of travel. Airline accidents have been on a consistent global decline since more than 30 years, thanks to strict regulations and rigorous standards in the aviation industry. That said, some airlines are still better performing than others when it comes to safety standards, and that’s why the Australia-based aviation analysis website AirlineRatings.com produces each year a list of safest airlines in the world after monitoring more than 400 airlines. In making its evaluation of the safest airlines in the world, AirlineRatings.com takes into account a comprehensive range of factors that include: (1) crashes over five years; (2) serious incidents over two years; (3) audits from aviation’s governing bodies and lead associations; (4) fleet age; and (5) expert analysis of pilot training. Here are the 10 carriers considered to be the safest airlines in 2023 by the AirlineRatings.com website.

There is more information (with trip reports & YouTube videos) below the slideshow. Do you agree with the list? Leave a comment.

10. ALASKA AIRLINES

Since its acquisition of Virgin America in 2016, Alaska Airline is the 5th largest airline of the USA. The carrier operates a large route network, primarily focused on connecting from the state of Alaska and the USA West Coast to over one hundred destinations in the USA, Hawaii, Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico. There are more than 45 million passengers that fly with the airline annually. Founded in 1932, the Seattle, Washington-based carrier has earned top marks over the years for its familial ambiance, friendly and relaxed service, on-time performance, excellent loyalty program, great amenities, and safety culture.

AirlineRatings.com published its list of the safest airlines of 2024 right before an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft experienced a midair emergency, leading to an unscheduled landing in Portland. The emergency situation arose when a cabin panel blew off during the flight. However, it seems that Boeing is the one to blame for the incident. Alaska Airlines has not had a single major crash in the past two decades and has successfully passed the safety audit of IOSA.

9. CATHAY PACIFIC

In 1946, Roy Farrell and Sydney de Kantzow – two ex-Air Force pilots known for flying ‘The Hump’ over the Himalayas – had the idea to fly much-needed goods from Australia into post-war China. From there came Cathay Pacific, an airline fueled by its founders’ passion for connecting the world with its home in Hong Kong. The airline serves more than 90 destinations in some 35 countries across Asia, the Pacific, Europe, North America, the Middle East and Africa. Cathay Pacific operates a fleet consisting of Airbus A330, Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 wide-body aircraft. Cathay Pacific has not suffered any significant incident in the past couple of decades.

Finnair, which operates out of Helsinki Airport, is one of the world’s oldest operating airlines. Since it was founded over 100 years ago in 1923, the company has grown from a small airline to a strong and respected member of the international airline industry. The carrier flies over 10 million passengers per year to almost 80 destinations in Europe, Asia and North American aboard its modern fleet of Airbus, Embraer and ATR aircraft. With no fatal or hull-loss accidents in the modern jet area, Finnair is consistently ranked one of the safest airlines in the world and is famous for its extensive, top-notch airline’s pilot training and maintenance programs.

7. ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS (ANA)

All Nippon Airways (ANA) is the largest domestic air carrier in Japan, and one of the largest airlines in the world. The company was founded in 1952 and was initially restricted to carrying passengers and freight on Japan’s major domestic routes, while Japan Air Lines basically monopolized the country’s overseas air service. That all changed though in late 1980s when All Nippon Airways began regular service on major international routes, taking advantage of certain deregulation measures in the industry. ANA has consistently been ranked among the safest airlines in the world and has not been involved in any serious or fatal accidents since 1971.
